Devastation of Locusts
1:1

The word of ADONAI that
came to Yoel Ben Petuel.

Shemot 10:1-20
1:2
Shim'u-zot haZekenim, veha'azinu, kol yoshevei ha'aretz; hehayetah zot bimeichem, ve'im bimei Avoteichem.
Hear this, you elders,
And give ear, all you inhabitants of the land!
Has anything
like this
happened in your days,
Or even in the days of
your fathers?
1:3
Sam gafni leshamah, ute'enati liktzafah; chasof chasafah vehishlich, hilbinu sarigeiha.
It has laid waste my vine
and splintered my fig tree; it has stripped off their bark and thrown it down;
their branches are made white.
1:8
Eli kivtulah chagurat-sak al-ba'al ne'ureiha.
Lament
like a virgin wearing sackcloth for the bridegroom of her youth.
1:9
Hacherat minchah vanesech mibeit ADONAI avelu hakkohanim, mesharetei ADONAI
The grain offering
and the drink offering are cut off from the House of ADONAI.
The kohanim mourn, the ministers of ADONAI.
1:10
Shudad sadeh, avelah adamah; ki shudad dagan, hovish tirosh umlal yitzhar.
The fields are destroyed,
the ground mourns, because the grain is destroyed, the wine dries up, the oil
languishes.
1:11
Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers,
for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the
field is perished.
1:12
Hagefen hovishah, vehate'enah umlalah; rimon gam-tamar vetapuach, kol-'atzei hasadeh yaveshu, ki-hovish sason min-benei adam.ס
The vine has dried up, And
the fig tree has withered; The pomegranate tree, The palm tree also, And the
apple tree— All the trees of the field are withered; Surely joy has withered
away from the sons of men.
1:13
Set apart a fast;
call a solemn assembly. Gather the zekenim (elders) and all the inhabitants
of the land to the House of ADONAI your
Elohim, and cry out to ADONAI.
1:15
Ahah layom; ki karov yom ADONAI ucheshod mishadai yavo.
Alas
for the day! For the day of ADONAI is
near, and as destruction from the SHADAI
(Almighty) it comes.
1:16
Halo neged eineinu ochel nichrat; mibbeit Eloheinu simchah vagil.
Is not the
food cut off before our eyes, joy and gladness from the House of our Elohim?
1:17
Aveshu ferudot, tachat megrefoteihem, nashamu otzarot, nehersu mamegurot; ki hovish dagan.
The seed has rotted under
their clods, storehouses are laid waste, granaries are broken
down, for the grain has withered.
1:18
How the beasts groan! The
herds of cattle are perplexed because there is no pasture for them; even the
flocks of sheep suffer.
1:19
Eleicha ADONAI ekra; ki esh, achelah ne'ot midbar, velehavah, lihatah kol-'atzei hasadeh.
To
you, O LORD, I call. For fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and
flame has burned all the trees of the field.
1:20
The palmer-worm (Dichomeris ligulella; caterpillar) is occasionally responsible for widespread defoliation of hardwoods such as red, white, and chestnut oaks, basswood, cherry, and apple. The larvae skeletonize leaves and may fold or roll them during feeding. Outbreaks rarely last most than 1 or 2 years, and usually occur during unusually hot, dry springs. Although they may cause noticeable defoliation, outbreaks rarely result in permanent tree damage.
Adult moths overwinter and in spring the females lay eggs, depositing them singly on the expanding leaves. Larval feeding peaks during June; the full-grown larvae are about ½ inch long and can be identified most easily by the one narrow and two wide green stripes running down the back. Pupation takes place early in July at the final feeding site, and most adults appear by the end of July. The grayish to brownish adult moths are about 2/3 inch long, and are most conspicuous during outbreaks when large numbers are disturbed from resting sites on shrubs and small trees. There is one generation annually.Canker-worm ( Paleacrita vernata )are caterpillars when immature and later develop into moths as adults. As immatures, they have elongate, cylindrical bodies with a well developed head capsule. In addition, they also have 3 pairs of thoracic legs. Further back on the body, they also have 2-3 pairs of abdominal legs known as prolegs. The Spring Cankerworm has 2 pairs while the Fall Cankerworm has 3 pairs. Gazam is used to refer to the third larval stage.
