These verses detail the theft and hiding of Lavan's household idols (teraphim) by Rachel during Yaakov's secret departure. Rachel steals the dieties (31:19), Lavan confronts Ya'akov about them (31:30), Rachel hides them in a saddle and sits on them (31:34), and later, Ya'akov orders his family to dispose of foreign dieties (35:2).
Key Verses Summary:
What "put away" means in Rabbinical understanding:
Rabbinical sources explain that destroying idols immediately might not fully address the underlying issue. If people destroy idols while still holding them in their hearts, they haven't truly turned away from idolatry. Putting away requires an act of will – a conscious decision to reject these foreign dieties – which is the essential foundation for true repentance and devotion to HaShem.
In short, put away speaks to both external action and internal transformation – first separating oneself from that which is false, then being able to completely remove its presence from one's life and community.
