And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of YHWH (יהוה), saying:
Shall I go up into any of the cities of Yehudah?
And YHWH said unto him:
Go up.
And David said:
Whither shall I go up?
And He said:
Unto Hevron.
2:2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Achino'am the Yizre'elit, and Avigal Nabal's wife the Karmeli.
2:3 And his men that [were] with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hevron.
2:4 And the men of Yehudah came, and there they anointed David king over the beit Yehudah. And they told David, saying, [That] the men of Yavesh-Gilead [were they] that buried Sha'ul.
2:5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Yavesh-Gilead, and said unto them,
Barukhim atem YHWH (יהוה), that ye have shewed this kindness unto adoneichem, [even] unto Sha'ul, and have buried him.
2:6 And now YHWH (יהוה) shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.
2:7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Sha'ul is dead, and also the beit Yehudah have anointed me king over them.
2:8 But Avner Ben Ner, captain of Sha'ul's host, took Ish-Boshet (אישׁ־בּשׁת) Ben Sha'ul, and brought him over to Machanayim;
2:9 And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Yezreel, and over Efrayim, and over Benyamin, and over all Yisra'el.
2:10 Ish-Boshet (אישׁ־בּשׁת) Sha'ul's son [was] forty years old when he began to reign over Yisra'el, and reigned two years. But the beit Yehudah followed David.
2:11 And the time that David was king in Hevron over the beit Yehudah was seven years and six months.
2:12 And Avner Ben Ner, and the avadim Ish-Boshet (אישׁ־בּשׁת) Ben Sha'ul, went out from Machanayim to Giveon.
2:13 And Yo'av Ben Tzeruyah, and the avadim David, went out, and met together by the pool of Giveon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
2:14 And Avner said to Yo'av:
Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Yo'av said, Let them arise.
2:15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benyamin, which [pertained] to Ish-Boshet (אישׁ־בּשׁת) Ben Sha'ul, and twelve of the avadim David.
2:16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Chelkat-Hatzurim, which [is] in Giveon.
2:17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Avner was beaten, and the men of Yisra'el, before the avadim David.
2:18 And there were three banim of Tzeruyah there, Yo'av, and Avishai, and Asahel: and Asahel [was as] light of foot as a wild roe.
2:19 And Asahel pursued after Avner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Avner.
2:20 Then Avner looked behind him, and said:
[Art] thou Asahel?
And he answered:
I [am].
2:21 And Avner said to him:
Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
2:22 And Avner said again to Asahel:
Turn thee aside from following me:
Wherefore should I smite thee to the ground?
How then should I hold up my face to Yo'av thy brother?
2:23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Avner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth [rib], that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, [that] as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
2:24 Yo'av also and Avishai pursued after Avner:
and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that [lieth] before Giach by the way of the wilderness of Giveon.
2:25 And the Benai Benyamin Gatered themselves together after Avner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
2:26 Then Avner called to Yo'av, and said:
Shall the sword devour for ever?
Knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end?
How long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
2:27 And Yo'av said,
[As] Elohim (אלהים) liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.
2:28 So Yo'av blew a shofar, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Yisra'el no more, neither fought they any more.
2:29 And Avner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Yarden, and went through all Bitron, and they came to Machanayim.
2:30 And Yo'av returned from following Avner: and when he had Gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's avadim nineteen men and Asahel.
2:31 But the avadim David had smitten of Benyamin, and of Avner's men, [so that] three hundred and threescore men died.
2:32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the Kever (tomb) of his father, which [was in] Beit Lechem. And Yo'av and his men went all night, and they came to Hevron at break of day.
av´nẽr (אבנר, 'abhnēr; in 1Sa_14:50 the Hebrew has the fuller form, אבינר, 'ăbhīnēr, Abiner; compare Abiram by the side of Avram; meaning, “my father is a lamp”): Captain of the host under Shaul and Ishbosheth (Eshbaal). He was Saul's cousin; Ner the father of Abner and Kish the father of Saul being brothers, the sons of Abiel (1Sa_14:50). In 1Ch_8:33; 1Ch_9:39 the text appears to be faulty; read: And Ner begat Avner, and Kish begat Shaul. According to 1Ch_27:21 Abner had a son by the name of Yaasiel.
Asahel as´a-hel (עשׂהאל, ‛ăsāh'ēl, “EL hath made”; Ἀσαήλ, Asaḗl):(1) The brother of Yoav and Abishai. The three were sons of Zeruyah, one of David's sisters (1Ch_2:15, 1Ch_2:16; 2Sa_2:18, etc.). The three brothers seem to have been from the beginning members of David's troop of strangely respectable brigands.
Ish Bo'shet - (אישׁ־בּשׁת, 'īsh-bōsheth, “man of shame”' Ἰεσβοσθέ, Iesbosthé): Called אשׁבּעל, 'eshba‛al, “man of Baal” (1Ch_8:33), and ישׁוי, yishwī, “man of Yahweh” (?), perhaps for אישׁיו, 'īsheyō (1Sa_14:49). Fourth and youngest son of Sha'ul, His original name was "Esh-baal (= "man of ba'al" [then, YHWH]; see I Chron. viii. 33, ix. 39)
