The Ark Brought to Yerushalayim

(1 Chr 13:1-14; 15:25-16:3)

6:1 Again, David gathered together all [the] chosen [men] of Yisra'el, thirty thousand.

6:2 And David arose, and went with all the people that [were] with him from Ba'ale Yehudah, to bring up from thence the Aron ha Elohim (אלהים), whose name is called by the Name of YHWH (יהוה) Tzva'ot that dwelleth [between] the Keruvim.

6:3 And they set the Aron ha Elohim (אלהים) upon a new cart, and brought it out of the beit Avinadav that [was] in Giveah: and Uzzah and Achyo, Benai Avinadav, drave the new cart.

6:4 And they brought it out of the beit Avinadav which [was] at Giveah, accompanying the Aron ha Elohim (אלהים): and Achyo went before ha Aron.

6:5 And David and all the beit Yisra'el played before YHWH (יהוה) on all manner of [instruments made of] fir wood, even on kinnorot, and on nevalim (lyres), and on tambourines (toph), and on cornets, and on cymbals.

6:6 And when they came to Nakhon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth [his hand] to the Aron ha Elohim (אלהים), and took hold of it; for the oxen shook [it].

6:7 And the anger of YHWH (יהוה) was kindled against Uzzah; and Elohim (אלהים) smote him there for [his] error; and there he died by the Aron ha Elohim (אלהים).

6:8 And David was displeased, because YHWH (יהוה) had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place Peretz-Uzzah (breach of Uzzah) to this day.

6:9 And David was afraid of YHWH (יהוה) that day, and said, How shall the Aron ha YHWH (יהוה) come to me?

6:10 So David would not remove the Aron ha YHWH (יהוה) unto him into the city of David: but David carried it aside into the beit Oved-Edom the Gittite.

6:11 And the Aron ha YHWH (יהוה) continued in the beit Oved-Edom the Gittite three months: and YHWH (יהוה) blessed Oved-Edom, and all his household.

David brings the Ark to Yerushalayim

(1 Chr 15:1-16:3, esp 15:26-16:1)

6:12 And it was told king David, saying, YHWH (יהוה) hath blessed the beit Oved-Edom, and all that [pertaineth] unto him, because of the Aron ha Elohim (אלהים). So David went and brought up the Aron ha Elohim (אלהים) from the beit Oved-Edom into the city of David with gladness.

6:13 And it was [so], that when they that bare the Aron ha YHWH (יהוה) had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings.

6:14 And David danced before YHWH (יהוה) with all [his] might; and David [was] girded with a linen ephod.

6:15 So David and all the beit Yisra'el brought up the Aron ha YHWH (יהוה) with shouting, and with the sound of the shofar.

6:16 And as the Aron ha YHWH (יהוה) came into the city of David, Mikhal Sha'ul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before YHWH (יהוה); and she despised him in her heart.

6:17 And they brought in the Aron ha YHWH (יהוה), and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered Olot and shelamim before YHWH (יהוה).

6:18 And as soon as David had made an end of offering Olot and shelamim, he blessed the people in the Name of YHWH (יהוה) Tzva'ot.

6:19 And he dealt among all the people, [even] among the whole multitude of Yisra'el, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece [of flesh], and a flagon [of wine]. So all the people departed every one to his house.

6:20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Mikhal Bat Sha'ul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the melekh Yisra'el to day, who uncovered himself to day in the eyes of the handmaids of his avadim, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!

6:21 And David said unto Mikhal, [It was] before YHWH (יהוה), which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of YHWH (יהוה), over Yisra'el: therefore will I play before YHWH (יהוה).

6:22 And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.

6:23 Therefore Mikhal Bat Sha'ul had no child unto the day of her death.

It has frequently been asked why Hashem struck Uzzah for touching the ark when the Pelistim often touched it without being destroyed. The answer seems to be that "the nearer a man is to Hashem, the more solemnly and speedily he will be judged for any evil." Judgment must begin at the house of Hashem.
