Ester goes before the king invites both Achashverosh and Haman to a feast, laying a trap for the wicked viceroy.

5:1 Now it came to pass on the third day, that Ester put on [her] royal [apparel], and stood in the inner court of ha melekh's house, over against ha melekh's house: and ha melekh sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.

5:2 And it was so, when ha melekh saw Ester ha malkah (מלכּה) standing in the court, [that] she obtained favour in his sight: and ha melekh held out to Ester the golden sceptre that [was] in his hand. So Ester drew near, and touched the top of the sceptre.

5:3 Then said ha melekh to her, What wilt you, malkah (מלכּה) Ester? and what [is] thy request? it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom.

5:4

And Ester answered:

5:5 Then ha melekh said, Cause Haman (המן) to make haste, that he may do as Ester have said. So ha melekh and Haman (המן) came to the mishteh (banquet) that Ester had prepared.

5:6 And ha melekh said to Ester at the mishteh (banquet) of wine, What [is] thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: and what [is] thy request? even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.

5:7 Then answered Ester, and said:

My petition and my request [is];

5:8 If I have found favour in the sight of ha melekh, and if it please ha melekh to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let ha melekh and Haman (המן) come to the mishteh (banquet) that I shall prepare for them, and I will do to morrow as ha melekh have said.

5:9 Then went Haman (המן) forth that day joyful and with a glad heart: but when Haman (המן) saw Mordechai (מרדּכי) in ha melekh's gate, that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was full of indignation against Mordechai (מרדּכי).

5:10 Nevertheless Haman (המן) refrained himself: and when he came home, he sent and called for his friends, and Zeresh his wife.

5:11 And Haman (המן) told them of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all [the things] wherein ha melekh had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and avadim of ha melekh.

5:12 Haman (המן) said moreover, Yea, Ester ha malkah (מלכּה) did let no man come in with ha melekh to the mishteh (banquet) that she had prepared but myself; and to morrow am I invited to her also with ha melekh.

5:13 Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordechai (מרדּכי) the Yehudi sitting at ha melekh's gate.

5:14 Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends to him, Let a gallows be made of fifty cubits high, and to morrow speak you to ha melekh that Mordechai (מרדּכי) may be hanged thereon: then go you in merrily with ha melekh to the mishteh (banquet). And the thing pleased Haman (המן); and he caused the gallows to be made.
