13:1 Sha'ul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Yisrael,
13:2 Sha'ul chose him three thousand [men] of Yisrael; [whereof] two thousand were with Sha'ul in Mikmash and in mount Beit-el, and a thousand were with Yonatan in Giveah of Benyamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.
13:3 And Yonatan smote the garrison of the Pelishtim that [was] in Geva, and the Pelishtim heard [of it]. And Sha'ul blew the shofar throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
13:4 And all Yisrael heard say [that] Sha'ul had smitten a garrison of the Pelishtim , and [that] Yisrael also was had in abomination with the Pelishtim . And the people were called together after Sha'ul to Gilgal.
13:5 And the Pelishtim gathered themselves together to fight with Yisrael, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which [is] on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beit-Aven.
13:6 When the men of Yisrael saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
13:7 And [some of] the Hebrews went over Yardan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Sha'ul, he [was] yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
13:8 And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Shemuel (שׁמוּאל) [had appointed]: but Shemuel (שׁמוּאל) came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
13:9 And Sha'ul said, Bring hither a Olah to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the Olah.
13:10 And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the Olah, behold, Shemuel (שׁמוּאל) came; and Sha'ul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.
13:11 And Shemuel (שׁמוּאל) said, What have you done? And Sha'ul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and [that] you camest not within the days appointed, and [that] the Pelishtim gathered themselves together at Michmash;
13:12 Therefore said I, The Pelishtim will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to YEHOVAH (יהוה): I forced myself therefore, and offered a Olah.
13:13 And Shemuel (שׁמוּאל) said to Sha'ul:
you have done foolishly: you have not kept the commandment of YEHOVAH (יהוה) your Elohim (אלהים), which he commanded thee: for now would YEHOVAH (יהוה) have established your kingdom upon Yisrael for ever.
13:14 But now your kingdom shall not continue: YEHOVAH (יהוה) has sought him a man after His own heart, and YEHOVAH (יהוה) has commanded Him [to be] captain over His people, because you have not kept [that] which YEHOVAH (יהוה) commanded you.
13:15 And Shemuel (שׁמוּאל) arose, and gat him up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benyamin. And Sha'ul numbered the people [that were] present with him, about six hundred men.
13:16 And Sha'ul, and Yonatan his son, and the people [that were] present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benyamin: but the Pelishtim encamped in Mikmash.
13:17 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Pelishtim in three companies: one company turned to the way [that leads to] Ophrah, to the land of Shual:
13:18 And another company turned the way [to] Beit-Horon: and another company turned [to] the way of the border that looks to the valley of Tzevoim toward the wilderness.
13:19 Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Yisrael: for the Pelishtim said, Lest the Hebrews make [them] swords or spears:
13:20 But all the Yisraelites went down to the Pelishtim , to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.
13:21 Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.
13:22 So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that [were] with Sha'ul and Yonatan: but with Sha'ul and with Yonatan his son was there found.
13:23 And the garrison of the Pelishtim went out to the passage of Michmash.
