The Mournful Song of the Exiles
Psalm 137 is sung on the Eve of Tish`a b'av falls on the 9th day of the month of Av, and note there are 9 verses in this Chapter, is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar that is in July or August in the Gregorian calendar. When Tisha b'Av falls on Shabbat, it then is nidḥā (נִדְחָה "delayed"). Thus the observance of Tisha b'Av can take place on the following day (that is, Sunday). The date of the return from Babylon was .c. 536. and Babylon was destroyed by Darius Hystaspes in b.c. 516.

137:1 עַֽל־נַֽהֲר֨וֹת | בָּבֶ֗ל שָׁ֣ם יָ֖שַׁבְנוּ גַּם־בָּכִ֑ינוּ בְּ֜זָכְרֵ֗נוּ אֶת־צִיּֽוֹן:
Al-naharot | bavel sham yashavnu gam-bachinu bezacherenu et-Tziyon:

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Tziyon.
137:2 עַל־עֲרָבִ֥ים בְּתוֹכָ֑הּ תָּ֜לִ֗ינוּ כִּנֹּֽרוֹתֵֽינוּ:
Al-aravim betochah talinu kinoroteinu:
We hanged our kinorot upon the willows in the midst thereof.
137:3 כִּ֚י שָׁ֨ם שְׁאֵל֪וּנוּ שׁוֹבֵ֡ינוּ דִּבְרֵי־שִׁ֖יר וְתוֹלָלֵ֣ינוּ שִׂמְחָ֑ה שִׁ֥ירוּ לָ֜֗נוּ מִשִּׁ֥יר צִיּֽוֹן:
Ki sham she'elunu shoveinu divrei-shir vetolaleinu simchah shiru lanu mishir Tziyon:
For there those who carried us away captive asked of us a song, And those who plundered us requested mirth, Saying,
"Sing us one of the songs of Tzyon!"

If I forget you, O Yerushalayim, Let my right hand forget its skill!

תִּדְבַּ֚ק לְשׁוֹנִ֨י | לְחִכִּי֘ אִם־לֹ֪א אֶ֫זְכְּרֵ֥כִי אִם־לֹ֣א אַֽ֖עֲלֶה אֶת־יְרֽוּשָׁלִַ֑ם עַ֜֗ל רֹ֣אשׁ שִׂמְחָתִֽי:
Tidbak leshoni | lechikki im-lo ezkerechi im-lo a'aleh et-yerushalaim al rosh simchati:
If I do not remember you, Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth— If I do not exalt Yerushalayim Above my chief joy.

Zechor Adonai | livnei Edom et yom Yerushalayim
ha'omerim aru | aru ad hayesod bah:
Remember, O YHWH (יהוה), against the sons of Edom
In the day of Yerushalayim; who said,
"Raze it, raze it To its very foundation."

בַּת־בָּבֶ֗ל הַשְּׁד֫וּדָ֥ה אַשְׁרֵ֥י שֶׁיְשַׁלֶּם־לָ֑ךְ אֶת־גְּ֜מוּלֵ֗ךְ שֶׁגָּמַ֥לְתְּ לָֽנוּ:
137:9 אַשְׁרֵ֚י | שֶׁיֹּאחֵ֓ז וְנִפֵּ֬ץ אֶת־עֹ֜לָלַ֗יִךְ אֶל־הַסָּֽלַע:
Ashrei | sheyochez venipetz et-olalayich el-hasala:
