The Growth of David's Army

(1 Shemuel 22:1,2)

12:1 Now these [are] they that came to Davyid to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Shaul Ben Kish: and they [were] among the mighty men, helpers of the war.

12:2 [They were] armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in [hurling] stones and [shooting] arrows out of a bow, [even] of Shaul's achim of Benyamin.

12:3 The chief [was] Ahiezer, then Yo'ash, the benai Shemaah the Giveatite; and Yezi'el, and Pelet, the benai Azmaveth; and Berakah, and Yehu the Antotite,

12:4 -5And Yismayah the Giveonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; and

Yiremyah, and Yachazi'el, and Yochanan, and Yozavad the Gederatite,

*12:5-6 Eluzai, and Yerimot, and Bealyah, and Shemaryah, and Shefatyah the Harufite,

12:6 -7 Elkanah, and Yesyah, and Azare'el, and Yoezer, and Yashov'am, the Korachites,

12:7 -8 And Yo'elah, and Zevadyah, the benai Yeroham of Gedor.

12:8 -9 And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto Davyid into the hold to the wilderness men of might, [and] men of war [fit] for the battle, that could handle shi'eld and buckler, whose faces [were like] the faces of lions, and [were] as swift as the roes upon the mountains;

12:9 -10 Etzer the first, Ovadyah the second, Eli'av the third,

12:10 -11 Mishmannah the fourth, Yiremyah the fifth,

12:11-12  Attai the sixth, Eli'el the seventh,

12:12 -13 Yochanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,

12:13 -14 Yiremyah the tenth, Machbannai the 'eleventh.

12:14 -15 These [were] of the benai Gad, captains of the host: one of the least [was] over an hundred, and the greatest over a thousand.

12:15 -16 These [are] they that went over Yarden in the first month, when it had overflown all his banks; and they put to flight all [them] of the valleys, [both] toward the east, and toward the west.

12:16 -17 And there came of the benai Benyamin and Yehudah to the hold unto Davyid.

12:17 -18 And Davyid went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if [ye be come] to betray me to mine enemies, seeing [there is] no wrong in mine hands, the Elohim (אלהים) of Avoteinu look [thereon], and rebuke [it].

12:18 -19 Then the spirit came upon Amasai, [who was] chief of the captains, [and he said], Thine [are we], Davyid, and on thy side, thou son of Yishai: peace, peace [be] unto thee, and peace [be] to thine helpers; for thy Elohim (אלהים) helpeth thee. Then Davyid received them, and made them captains of the band.

12:19-20 And there f'ell [some] of Menesheh to Davyid, when he came with the P'lishtim against Shaul to battle: but they helped them not: for the masters of the P'lishtim upon advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Shaul to [the jeopardy of] our heads.

12:20-21 As he went to Ziklag, there f'ell to him of Menasheh, Adnah, and Yozabad, and Yedia'el, and Mika'el, and Yozabad, and Elihu, and Ziltai, captains of the thousands that [were] of Menesheh.

12:21 -22 And they helped Davyid against the band [of the rovers]: for they [were] all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.

12:22-23 For at [that] time day by day there came to Davyid to help him, until [it was] a great host, like the host of Elohim (אלהים).

12:23-24 And these [are] the numbers of the bands [that were] ready armed to the war, [and] came to Davyid to Chevron, to turn ha malkut of Shaul to him, according to the Dvar YHWH (יהוה).

12:24-25 The benai Yehudah that bare shi'eld and spear [were] six thousand and eight hundred, ready armed to the war.

12:28 -29 And Tzadok, a young man mighty of valour, and of his father's bayit twenty and two captains.

12:29 -30 And of the benai Benyamin, the kindred of Shaul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the bayit of Shaul.

12:31-32 And of the half shevet (tribe) of Menasheh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by name, to come and make Davyid king.

12:32 -33 And of the benai Yissakhar, [which were men] that had understanding of the times, to know what Yisra'el ought to do; the heads of them [were] two hundred; and all their achim [were] at their commandment.

12:33-34  Of Zevulun, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which could keep rank: [they were] not of double heart.

12:34 -35 And of Naftali a thousand captains, and with them with shi'eld and spear thirty and seven thousand.

12:35 -36 And of the Danites expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred.

12:36 -37 And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand.

12:37 -38 And on the other side of Yarden, of the Reuvenites, and the Gadites, and of the half shevet (tribe) of Menasheh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.

12:38 -39 All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a levav shalem to Chevron, to make Davyid king over all Yisra'el: and all the rest also of Yisra'el [were] of one heart to make Davyid king.

12:39 -40 And there they were with Davyid three days, eating and drinking: for their achim had prepared for them.

12:40 -41 Moreover they that were nigh them, [even] unto Yissakhar and Zevulun and Naftali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, [and] meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunkes of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for [there was] joy in Yisra'el.
