21:1 And Satan (adversary) stood up against Yisrael, and provoked Davyid to mispar (number) Yisrael.
21:2 And Davyid said to Yo'av and to the sarei (princes) of the people, Go, mispar (number) Yisrael from Beer-Sheva even to Dan(south to north); and bring the mispar of them to me, that I may know [it].
YHWH (יהוה) make His people an hundred times so many more as they [be]:
but, my master ha melekh, [are] they not all my master's avadim?
Why then doth my master require this thing?
Why will he be a cause of ashmah (trepass) to Yisrael?
21:4 Nevertheless ha melekh's word prevailed against Yo'av. Wherefore Yo'av departed, and went throughout all Yisrael, and came to Yerushalayim.
21:5 And Yo'av gave the sum of the mispar of the people unto Davyid. And all [they of]
Yisrael were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and
Yehudah [was] four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
21:6 But Levi and BenYamin counted he not among them:
for ha melekh's word was abominable to Yo'av.
21:7 And Elohim (אלהים) was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Yisrael.
21:8 And Davyid said unto Elohim (אלהים), I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy eved; for I have done very foolishly.
21:9 And YHWH (יהוה) spake unto Gad, Davyid's seer, saying,
21:10 Go and tell Davyid, saying:
Thus saith YHWH (יהוה), I offer thee three [things]:
choose thee one of them, that I may do [it] unto thee.
21:11 So Gad came to Davyid, and said unto him, Thus saith YHWH (יהוה), Choose thee
21:12 Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh [thee]; or else three days the sword of YHWH (יהוה), even the pestilence, in the land, and the messenger of YHWH (יהוה) destroying throughout all the coasts of Yisrael. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
21:13 And Davyid said unto Gad:
I am in a great distress: let me fall now into the hand of YHWH (יהוה); for very great [are] his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.
21:14 So YHWH (יהוה) sent pestilence upon Yisrael: and there fell of Yisrael seventy thousand men.
21:15 And Elohim (אלהים) sent an messenger unto Yerushalayim to destroy it: and as he was destroying, YHWH (יהוה) beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the messenger that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the messenger of YHWH (יהוה) stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Yevusite.
21:16 And Davyid lifted up his eyes, and saw the messenger of YHWH (יהוה) stand between the earth and the shamayim, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Yerushalayim. Then Davyid and the elders [of Yisrael, who were] clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
21:17 And Davyid said unto Elohim (אלהים),
[Is it] not I [that] commanded the people to be mispar (number)? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but [as for] these sheep, what have they done?
let thine hand, I pray thee, O YHWH (יהוה) Elohai, be on me, and on my father's bayit; but not on thy people, that they should be magefah (plague)d.
21:18 Then the messenger of YHWH (יהוה) commanded Gad to say to Davyid, that Davyid should go up, and set up an Mizbe'ach unto YHWH (יהוה) in the threshing floor of Ornan the Yevusite.
21:19 And Davyid went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the Name of YHWH (יהוה).
21:20 And Ornan turned back, and saw the messenger; and his four banim with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing chittim (wheat).
21:21 And as Davyid came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw Davyid, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to Davyid with [his] face to the ground.
21:22 Then Davyid said to Ornan, Grant me the place of [this] threshing floor, that I may build an Mizbe'ach therein unto YHWH (יהוה): thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the magefah (plague) may be stayed from the people.
21:23 And Ornan said unto Davyid, Take [it] to thee, and let my master the melekh do [that which is] good in his eyes: lo, I give [thee] the oxen [also] for Olot, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the chittim (wheat) for the minchah; I give it all.
21:24 And melekh Davyid said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take [that] which [is] thine for YHWH (יהוה), nor offer Olot without cost.
21:25 So Davyid gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of zahav by weight. 2 Shemuel 24:24
21:26 And Davyid built there an Mizbe'ach unto YHWH (יהוה), and offered Olot and shelamim, and called upon YHWH (יהוה); and he answered him from shamayim by fire upon the Mizbe'ach olat.
21:27 And YHWH (יהוה) commanded the messenger; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.
21:28 At that time when Davyid saw that YHWH (יהוה) had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Yebusite, then he sacrificed there.
21:29 For the mishkan YHWH (יהוה), which Moshe made in the wilderness, and the Mizbe'ach the olat, [were] at that season in the bamah (high place) at Giveon.
21:30 But Davyid could not go before it to enquire of Elohim (אלהים): for he was afraid because of the sword of the messenger of YHWH (יהוה).
